Dr. Jason C. Furtado is currently a Professor of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma (OU) and is the founder of JF Weather & Climate Analytics, LLC. A large-scale climate dynamicist by training, Dr. Furtado’s expertise includes subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) forecasting, extreme weather prediction, decadal climate variability, and climate change. His research is anchored in transforming fundamental science with statistical analyses of environmental data and model output and with creating data-driven models and diagnostic products for improving decision making in the weather-climate space. Dr. Furtado has led several major federally funded research projects ($7M+ USD) exploring and understanding the atmospheric processes that lead to heatwaves, heavy precipitation, and extreme winter weather. He has over 60 peer-reviewed publications in these areas of research.
Prior to joining the OU faculty in 2015, Dr. Furtado worked as a climate scientist and consultant for Atmospheric and Environmental Research (now part of the Janus Research Group) in the Boston area. There, he developed useful products and targeted research results for clients in finance, agriculture, and energy. He has also conducted nearly 100 media interviews for international news agencies covering topics in extreme weather, climate change, and climate policy. He has also served on several international panels on weather and climate (e.g., the US CLIVAR Predictability, Predictions, and Applications Interface Panel, WWRP SAGE) and performs scientific outreach to K-12 students throughout the US.
Dr. Furtado earned dual B.S. degrees in Meteorology and Mathematics from Lyndon State College, a M.S. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from The Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also an American Meteorological Society’s Certified Consulting Meteorologist (AMS CCM) certification in recognition of his expertise in meteorology and climate.
