About

Jason C. Furtado | Owner

I’m Jason Furtado, a climate scientist who studies why the atmosphere behaves the way it does days to weeks ahead, and how to turn that into forecasts people can act on. I also study how weather extremes today are changing from the past (frequency and intensity) and how they may change in the future.

I created JF Weather & Climate Analytics, LLC to give industries an independent expert view of subseasonal-to-seasonal weather risk and climate risk management. I have two decades work of experience and expertise in these areas. I earned dual B.S. in Meteorology and Mathematics at Lyndon State College, a M.S. in Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology. From 2011 to 2015 I was a climate scientist and consultant at Atmospheric and Environmental Research near Boston, where I built products and targeted research for clients in finance, agriculture, and energy.

Since 2015 I have been a professor at the University of Oklahoma, where I lead a research group on climate dynamics, Pacific climate variability, and subseasonal prediction of extreme weather. We have studied how the stratosphere and the tropics shape North American cold outbreaks, tested how well forecast models predict them, including the February 2021 Great Plains event, and linked winter weather patterns to electricity load. We also identified new sources of predictability for ENSO-Pacific teleconnection patterns using previously-untapped knowledge of Southern Hemisphere variability. My research portfolio totals about $7.2M in federal and private funding, and my work has produced more than 60 peer-reviewed papers in top international journals. This work has also been recognized by numerous media outlets in the US and globally.
